I used to live in Sacramento, California.  It’s a great place to live — everything grows there, we were less than 2 hours away from both San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, and the weather is decent year-round.

I’m now retired and we’ve made a significant life change.  We bought a farm!  In southern Virginia!  I live with my husband, Bill, our little dog, Hobie the Wonder Dog, and our cat, Otis.  There’s also 4 pigs, 6 chickens, 4 cows and 2 miniature donkeys.  We are so fortunate that my daughter, son-in-law and our grandson also live on our property.  Our little town (population 500 or so) is quiet and friendly.  Life is good!

Our focus in life has changed as well.  We’re working to make the farm a place that provides as much of the food that our family needs and hopefully some to share with others.  Instead of driving 30 minutes to work each morning, I start my day harvesting vegetables and gathering eggs.  There’s a lot of work to be done to make the house ours and we’re working on it gradually.  I think we may be busier than we were when we were working full time.  Despite all the work, I wouldn’t trade our life for the one we had before.  Sometimes simple is good.  So very good.
